I really don't think there was any effort to steal the beard! First of all, it was much to prominant to be "slipped into the pocket".

We DO have some very unusual proportions, but IMO the real debate is whether these represented some aspect of Akhnaten within Atenism, or was a gender-based presentation, or possible both.

Seems logical to me from a methodical standpoint that the beard simply needed to be removed to avoid the risk of bumping into it over and over again while excavating the delicate items underneath it. ...
