The pyramids at Giza were built during the 4th dynasty. That came after quite a long history. The pharaohs from the time before the great pyramids were buried in other type tombs. Some are found at Saqqara, others at Abydos.

After more and more finds they have had to back date the egyptian history, so nnow before the first dynasty there's dynasty 0, and before that a time period sometimes called dynasty 00.

I also gather from a book by Wilkinson that even within the last 10 years people have discovered petroglyphs in the eatern desert that point to some very old origins of ancient egypt.
Not to mention some finds like Nabta Playa in Nubia. This is a site more than 5000 years old and part of a civilization there.

I'm not sure but I think that there is still more and more being discovered about the origins of ancient egypt. The culture did not just appear overnight, it developed over a long period of time.

You might find our discussion Ancient Civilization in the Sahara interesting.

We also discussed pre-dynastic egypt:

There's more than that, but I don't have time right this moment to find all the links Very Happy

I think Wilkinson does a tremendous job in his book. Did you enjoy it, anneke? He does an effective job of tying in the ancient petroglyphs of the Wadi Hammat region with the Naqada cultures along the Nile.

You're right, we're learning more every day about the incomplete picture of predynastic Egypt. It has been a somewhat neglected area of study, but brilliant researchers such as Wilkinson are rectifying that problem. Best of all, academically it is putting into its rightful grave the nonsense that some 10,000-year-old "lost" civilization is responsible for early monuments like the Giza pyramids and the Great Sphinx. Hats off to Wilkinson. That book is a gem.

I like "guy's" spastic little emoticon down by the sexy picture. It reminds me of how I'm typically feeling by the time I'm done with my evening Chicago commute from work.

Come on, anneke, where are your priorities?

Egypt first...earning a living second! Very Happy

Seriously, I think you'll enjoy the book. I've never had much of an interest in predynastic Egypt, but I found Wilkinson's work enlightening and interesting.

One of my immediate priorities is hosting a superbowl party Wink

Have to admit that in order to care any less about football I would have to slip into a coma, but I really like my friends Laughing
Looking forward to the half-time show though....

I'm about as interested in the Superbowl as you, anneke. I won't even bother with it--the museum is much better time spent for me. But if I were to watch it, it would be only for the commercials.

And generally I don't drink enough to pull a stunt like that on purpose.... Laughing

I think we're "safe" this year. I don't expect Sir Paul McCartney to fall out of character and moon the audience Shocked

Well, the food's ready. Just some tidying up left....

Anneke, how do you know Aktisanes was talking to you? I planned to have my own wardrobe malfunction just to keep things interesting.

It's the "show your breast" part that gave it away.
I'm assuming that as a man you just don't come equipped with the requisite parts Rolling Eyes

Is this discussion going off the deep end or what? Laughing

I should say so! I had to scroll way back to the top just to remind myself what we were originally talking about.

I'm easily distracted. All my teachers said so. Confused
