I stumbled upon the site last night and have been reading some of the posts. Very interesting stuff. Like a lot of the rest of you, I have been interested in ancient Egypt for a long time. I always love to learn stuff, so this is great!

I'm a geologist, so the first place you'll see a post from me is about rain and the Sphinx.

Nice to have you aboard, Diorite. I could've guessed from your name that you have more than a passing fancy for geology. Diorite is a particularly hard stone, is it not? Harder than granite? This is one stone the Egyptians used to work with granite.

I enjoyed your post about the Sphinx, though I put no stock in Schoch's theory. Perhaps you should go study the Sphinx and see what you think, given your vocation.

I'm also pleased to see you describe yourself as an Egyptophile. I'm a docent in the Egypt exhibit at the Field Museum of Chicago, and that's how we refer to ourselves, though if we want to make ourselves sound more scholarly we'll call ourselves "Egypticians." Very Happy

Hope to see you posting all over Egyptian Dreams, Diorite!

It's probably about the same hardness as granite, it's much darker colored, however. I did see a very nice diorite statue of Sekhmet.

Geology is left with a couple of rock terms from the Greeks who went to Egypt, like the Ptolomies. Diorite and the rock basalt probably have this origin, as well as the term porphyry, which referred to a purple rock with large pink crystals the Egyptians liked to use for statuary.

We have some diorite pounders in our collection, shaped very smooth, about the size of baseballs. I recently spoke with a stone mason who was absolutely astonished that the Egyptians used this sort of technology to produce granite sarcophagi, for instance. He explained that he has a hard enough time as it is with his carbide drills!
