HI, can anybody answer a question that has been puzzling me. How old was Ramses 11 when he died? I know it seems a simple question, but almost every book I read gives a different answer Confused paul

I assume you mean Ramesses The Great, not Ramesses XI.

We know he reigned for 66 or 67 years; and we know he was a youngish man when he ascended because he is shown on campaign and stuff with his father. However, there arent many birth records so figuring his age is a matter of divining how old he is by when he starts showing up in inscriptions.

Most things I've seen have him 23-25 when he ascended which means he was about 92 when he died. Some others have him as old as 30 but that seems a bit too old to me (as does 96 at the time of death).

Prolly what was in the books, right? LOL, sorry.

I have always read estimates for late eighties or even early 90's

The Theban Royal Mummy Project estimates his age as "perhaps nonagenarian".

I think it's hard to get exact ages from mummies. Usually you get an age range. Sometimes the estimates age range at death covers as much or more than a decade.

Very Happy I think I just said pretty much the same thing VBad said...
