There are coronation inscriptions from the reign of Horemheb and Ramses II (maybe more, but those I know about and have read parts of).

The coronation inscription for Horemheb (on a statue in the museum of Turin) tells us that "he proceeded to Thebes, in order to lead him into the presence of Amun, to bequeath him his kingly rule and make his term of rule."

Later is says: "Behold Amun has come to the Palace, his son [i.e. Horemheb] in front of him, in order to establish his crown on his head and to exalt his lifetime like his own! We are gathered together so that we may affix [his crowns] for him and assign to him the insignia of Re and glorify Amun on his account...." etc

I can't find any indication of when this ceremony took place, but there is enough "pomp and ciscumstance" that right after the death of the previous pharaoh seems unlikely.
