I know what you mean. I always keep my Faulkner handy. I just wish the dictionary wasn't quite so...concise.
Damn butlers--they always do it! _________________

It is back to Texts from the Amarna Period in Egypt by William J. Murnane for me! This time around I will be taking notes too. _________________ "You made heaven far away just to rise in it, to see all you make, Being unique and risen in your aspects of being as 'living Aten' manifest, shining, far yet near". |

I'm once again reading Aldred's Akhenaten: King of Egypt. I need to brush up on my Amarna lore, so then I'll probably read Redford's Akhenaten: the Heretic King.
I also tend to take note while I'm reading. Much of the time, anyway. I really don't like doing that, though, because then I get too concerned over what I should note and it takes away from simply enjoying the book. I can't seem to find a happy medium. _________________

That's why I usually wait until my second or third read-through to do it _________________ "You made heaven far away just to rise in it, to see all you make, Being unique and risen in your aspects of being as 'living Aten' manifest, shining, far yet near". |

I can't wait that long, so please forward all you're notes to me so I don't have to take any. _________________

LOL I turn my notes into websites
I find that summarizing the material in some way or another helps me actually analyze what's going on.
I really should reread Aldred's Akhenaten. That's such a classic. |

Sorry but they are all handwritten, besides my handwriting is kind of sloppy. Come to think of it my typinmg is not that great at the moment either because my daughter is hanging all over my arms

I find it easier to remember things once I write them down.

I would encourage you to do so! It is my absolute favorite! _________________ "You made heaven far away just to rise in it, to see all you make, Being unique and risen in your aspects of being as 'living Aten' manifest, shining, far yet near". |

You're right, you do. And very helpful to the rest of us it is.
Why am I talking like Yoda all of a sudden?
Sorry I am.

LOL I can see that. It must make typing quite the challenge.
But I wouldn't worry too much about your handwriting. My boss's writing is nearly the worst I've ever seen...second only to a rather wealthy client of ours whose handwriting is shocklingly awful (I guess you can get away with it if you're rich). _________________

Haha. I didn't even notice that until you kindly pointed it out!
Anyway just out of curiousity and no real reason I was wondering if anyone else here has ever read the Texts from the Amarna Period in Egypt book. _________________ "You made heaven far away just to rise in it, to see all you make, Being unique and risen in your aspects of being as 'living Aten' manifest, shining, far yet near". |

I have not read this one but it sounds interesting. Here's the Amazon link for it, which I'm going to hold onto for consideration. What do you like about the book, ImageOfAten (or anneke or anyone else who cares to sell me on it)? _________________

I like the fact that it's a carefully translated collection of texts from one time period. It's quite a diverse collection of resources.
Chapter 1: Prelude to the Amarna Age
Chapter 2: The reign of Amenhotep IV
Part I Royal documents
Part II Private documents
Chapter 3: The reign of Akhenaten Official Inscriptions and Miscellaneous Royal Records
Chapter 4: The reign of Akhenaten : Private monuments
Chapter 5: The aftermath of Akhenaten's Heresy
I King Neferneferuaten
II King Smenkhare
III King Tutankhamen
IV Reign of Ay
V Reign of Horemheb
VI The Amarna age in Later Records.
It's a bit in the tradition of Breasted. I also like the fact that these are the texts, but that Murnane doesn't try to put any spin or interpretation on them.
The index in the back is also quite nice, so that it's easy to find references if you are looking for someone or something. |

Thanks so much for that summary, anneke. I had been thinking maybe it was a book just on the Amarna Letters, which would certainly be interesting, but your description of it sells me. I'm glad I saved the link to the Amazon page. _________________

The reason I bought it was so I could have a collection of the known texts from the Amarna period. I was actually violently-happy the day it arrived. I never went to sleep that night. I just read until the sun came up! _________________ "You made heaven far away just to rise in it, to see all you make, Being unique and risen in your aspects of being as 'living Aten' manifest, shining, far yet near". |
