Hi

Im in 6th form doing a history project on Nefertiti, I was wondering if you could help me with it.

Some historians believed she returned after her dissapearence in the hieroglyphics as a co regent with the pharaoh and some believe she just died.

I was wondering what peoples views were on this.
And would i be able to use any information given in my project for sources?

Thanks

The fate of Nefertiti is one of those mysteries associated with this time period.

A good book for the argument in favor of Nefertiti as co-regent would be:
N. Reeves, Akhenaten: Egypt’s False Prophet, 2001.

This book should be available from your library.

People in favor of Nefertiti as co-regent and possibly pharaoh point to:
* depictions of Nefertiti in pharaoh-like poses like smiting the enemy. click here for a page from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts showing this scene

* Some stela (I think it's from Pere?) from that time period show two rulers and some would argue one of them looks like a woman.

* Some of the statues from the tomb of Tutankhamen showing a pharaoh look distinctly female. This is thought by some to be part of Nefertiti's royal funerary equipment. (Others would seriously disagree with that though Very Happy )

There's probably more, but that's what comes to mind (off the top of my head)

Against the Nefertiti as ruler is the following:
* There is no inscriptional evidence which positively identifies Nefertiti as a king (all the evidence is circumstantial and open to debate)

* There is a shabti figure belonging to Nefertiti found which gives her title as great royal wife. Critics would say that this shows that she was buried as a Queen, not a co-regent or pharaoh. Then again others think this could be a votive figure.

There's a picture of it on my website:

Another good book to read about Nefertiti is:
C. Aldred, Akhenaten: King of Egypt, 1988. (My favorite)

They didnt have them books in any library near me. The only thing they had was Nefertit: Egypt's sun queen by Joyce Tyldesley. And i photocopied some stuff out of a reference book but that was three pages and mostly on about how she just had more authority than other queens.

Tyldesley's book is good, so I'm glad to hear you found that one.

There are some good sites on the internet (and a whole lot more bad ones).

this is my page with some basic information:

This page from Touregypt is very well done and may be useful:

You might find this interesting it is the lecture notes I took by Earl Ertman http://touregypt.net/teblog/luxornews/?p=147 and I believe you can find more info in the Armana Letters. It is such a contraversial subject you will find loads to write about.
