Does anyone know of any websites that have translations of any of the so called 'Pessimistic Texts?' They're supposed to be writings by people that had given up their faith in the gods and the afterlife in times of famine and disease...basically when the country went through a political upheavel, like in the Intermediate Periods.

I believe this one might be helpful to you, Daughter_Of_SETI. A lot of these "Pessimistic Texts" were written later on, especially in the Middle Kingdom, to lament over the many troubles of the First Intermediate Period. From that point on many such texts were copied and recopied by scribal students.

I'm pretty sure you're familiar with the website from which I took the above example. Here is the index to the texts they have translated, and as you scroll down I would pay particular attention to the section entitled "Teachings, instructions, 'wisdom' literature" for other examples of the type of texts you want.

I hope this helps. Smile

Yeah, I've been on that site loads of times, but I'd never thought to check for the pessimistic texts there, so thanks for pointing that site out to me, Kmt_sesh. I've just been reading about the pessimistic literature in one of my books on religion, where they gave a couple of short examples of these texts. It sounds like really interesting stuff when you consider how religious the ancient Egyptians were at other times in their history. Okay, I'll get reading those texts now, thanks! pharaohthumb

Glad to be of help, Daughter_Of_SETI. There's a bunch of other texts on there about magic and religion, too. Applause
