I do not disagree, however there are several feline deities in A.E. How do you know it is Sekhmet ?

Looks like a god to me. The stance/clothing looks male. Not sure who it is though.

The deity in the photo is indeed Mahes, the son of Bastet. However, the deity in the papyrus is Mut- She is the _only_ lioness-headed goddess to wear the double crown, as befits Her status as consort of amun, the chief of the gods.

This is also my understanding, however I doubt she is represented with knifes, the text is in the wrong direction.

So far I believe the two pictures are just modern inspirations and not a copy of something real.

Mut has a bloodthirsty side- criminals were sentenced to death by being "burnt on the braziers of Mut", and knives were often a generic artistic convention to indicate a lioness goddess's sharp claws. That being said, I do agree that I've never seen an ancient depiction of Mut holding knives, but the papyrus is one made for tourists who won't know the fine points of things. It's still a pretty picture, though- I hope Kevin won't mind if I make a copy for my scrapbook?

As Kevin's representative at this moment I just need to remind you that in doing so, you must remember to pay handsome royalties to his humble Moderators. Razz

Hmm- I just agreed to adopt four more cats, so I have an abundance of those. How many would you like? Laughing

Failing that, I just got a handful of articles on feline domestication in AE, and none of them came from JStor, so they're a bit tricky to get. Would those be okay as baksheesh?

Sure, kat, that would be great! My apartment doesn't permit cats anyway. Laughing

Thanks! Wink

How awful! What does this place have against harmless, neccesary beings like cats? You must move immediately to a more civilized building! Very Happy

I found that picture on the web anyway, it's not one of mine (thankfully as I called it Sekhmet Embarassed ). Sorry Kmt_Sesh, no royalties this time. Very Happy
