During the reign of Akhenaten The Aten was installed as the principle god of Egypt, and the worship of the old gods was rejected. The Aten was not a new god but an obscure aspect of the sun god worshipped as early as the Old Kingdom. "Aten" was the traditional name for the sun-disk itself and so the name of the god is often translated as "the Aten" (for example, in the coffin texts of the Middle Kingdom) the word "Aten" represents the sun disc, and in the 'Story of Sinuhe' (also from the Middle Kingdom) Amenemhat I is described as soaring into the sky and uniting with Aten, his creator. During the New Kingdom, the Aten was considered to be an aspect of the composite deity Ra-Amun-Horus. (Ra represented the daytime sun, Amun represented the sun in the underworld and Horus represented the sunrise). Akhenaten proclaimed "the Aten" (the visible sun itself) to be the sole deity, taking sun worship a stage further.

I am aware of this. My point is that the "Aten" was a minor god. To me this would indicate he was a "bigger" god than we thought. _________________ How to start a blog

Jan Assmann in Theological Responses to Amarna : As Posener has shown, Personal Piety starts long before Amarna. In this respect, Amarna religion can be shown to be a reaction against the rise of a movement that threatened the position of the king by establishing a direct contact between god and an individual human being. Amarna religion meant a total cosmicization of divinity. God is the sun and nothing but the sun, animating the world by light and time. God is thus banned from history, politics and personal destiny which become the exclusively royal spheres of activity. The breakdown of Amarna religion meant a break-through of Personal Piety. What Akhenaten opposed now becomes the dominant paradigm. Before Amarna, Personal Piety may very possibly
have been just a local phenomenon, restricted to Thebes and to Theban festivals during which the god Amun appeared to his worshippers.
This paper is published in Redford's Festscrift. It was on the web, however I could not find it any longer. |

In the same article Jan Assmann wrote : There is no explicit refutation or discussion of Akhenaten's ideas. The name is, of course, never mentioned. But even allusions are missing. The very notion of "heresy" seems to be alien to Egyptian theology. |

Aten, the sun-disk, was an aspect of Ra-Atum. He embodied for the people the daily visible body of the sun god (?).
So, I would not speak of minor ...

I'm curious about the 15th dynasty coffin, its a pretty little piece.
Is this your photo Conorp? Do you know which museum it's in now? _________________ Priestess of Hathor, Superior of the Harem of Min, dedicated to Maat, beloved of Seshat and Nekhbet.

I'm confused: Is this dynasty 15 (mentioned in the title) or dynasty 25 (mentioned in last post)?
Is this really a depiction of the Aten? Usually the Aten's rays end in hands. Or is that unique to the Amarna period? _________________ Math and Art: http://mathematicsaroundus.blogspot.com/ |

I noticed in the description that the solar disk is identified as (Hor-) behdet. Who I've seen mentioned as Horus the Behdedite. Or Horus of Behdet.
This form of horus is depicted as a winged sundisk. _________________ Math and Art: http://mathematicsaroundus.blogspot.com/ |

Thankyou Conorp. I've never been to that Aussie Museum. It looks like it has some very nice pieces. _________________ Priestess of Hathor, Superior of the Harem of Min, dedicated to Maat, beloved of Seshat and Nekhbet.
