That's what I have read.
They referred to Nubia as Ta-sety "land of the bow"
And Ta-Nehesu (slightly different spelling used by Budge for instance), which means something like "land of the black".
There is also a location called Khent-hen-nefer which I think means a place south of the 2nd cataract. (for instance

The egyptians also called Nubia Kush in the Viceroy of Kush title (sa nsw n Ksh). _________________ Math and Art: http://mathematicsaroundus.blogspot.com/ |

First real empire so to speak in Nubia was based out of Kerma which is in the Dongola area The next one was the Napata (which is the name of the region of Kerma and Barkal area found in Dongola. The end of Napata Period (of which we know almost nothing cept their structures were small and mud brick. Essentially *nothing* survived. Though according to my text book there was a power struggle for which there is no evidence for ultimately causing end of Napata Period during which the Dongola area was abandoned due to changes in the flow of the Nile resulting in "bad lands" for farming and stuffs... The next phase of Nubia Nubia woke up one day decided to be a super power somehow though everyone around them was taken over by the Romans remained free aside from it's major long distance trade route and border with Egypt. The power base of the Kush (people of Nubia) moved at end of the power struggle south to Meroe. They had spent time as the rulers of Egypt trade buddies with Egypt conquered lands of Egypt and ultimately (In my opinion which is that of a student lacking in any credibility except that it is based on common sense) Meroe is south i do believe around the 5th cataract. (Ofcourse this power change is senseless when you learn their coronations were being held in the once abandoned now re habitated (though situation of nile and bad lands has NOT changed) Napata region where very egyptianesque stuff has started to happen, including big castles for those coronations. As for location of "Aethaeopia" according to my book it is south east of Nubia. _________________ Women who seek to be equal to men lack ambition. |

Well, lemme break it down for ya
But lemme just say first off the bat that neheshy didn't mean "black" white, red, or any color connotation, it just meant "southerner", "people of the south", etc. Even the name "Nehesy" wasn't reserved just for nubians, there are some egyptian nobles and and priests that are called "nehesy" as well. Hell, even Set was called Pa-Nehesy! (the southerner, due to his cult being in the south) But anyways...
About the main question, the egyptians realized the peoples to the south of them differed as much from each other as they did from themsselves, so they gave each of em different names. Lower nubia, which generally had good relations with egypt, was called Ta-Seti, whie upper nubia in the early period was called Yam, Irthet, Setju, but eventually unified to become the soon to be menacing kingdom of kerma. (called by the egyptians "kush"). And modern ethiopia wasn't really known to the egyptians, and scholars tend to think punt was in eritrea southern sudan instead.
hope that helped ya out _________________ Needing something witty |
