I have read the claim that the top of the great pyramid was covered in gold. But that is a fable, right?

I've decided to add a chapter to our geometry book. I decided that one chapter dealing with ancient egyptian geometry could be fun.

This means I have to invent interesting exercises to do Cool

Just want to make sure I have my facts straight.

I thought it was not a fable, but a fact, that the tops of pyramids and obelisks were gilded, but the gold was scraped off by robbers (or the capstones stolen?)

Or maybe it's just obelisks and not pyramids?

I don't believe the pyramidion of the Great Pyramid has ever been found, has it? Or even fragments thereof? Without the pyramidion I don't think that we can definitively answer that question. Numerous Classical writers recorded that it was true but I'm never sure how much to trust Classical writers. I think what's true is that we have more contemporary inscriptional evidence that pyramidions and obelisks were covered with gold. Kings liked to brag about that sort of thing.

In 1982 Stadelmann found the remains of a pyramidion in the vicinity of the Red Pyramid, but it was undecorated. In 1991 Hawass discovered the remains of the pyramidion to the satellite pyramid of the Great Pyramid; it, too, was undecorated, but that doesn't necessarily reflect the status of the Great Pyramid's pyramidion (although, admittedly, it's telling).

We do know it was done, however. Verner found the remains of the pyramidion to the pyramid of Khentkaus II at Abusir that was probably once covered with copper or gold.

LOL I don't think I've ever typed the words "pyramid" and "pyramidion" so much in one short post. I grabbed a lot of this information from this Tour Egypt article.

"An inscription found at the pyramid of Queen Udjebten by Jequier suggests that the pyramidion was cased with gold. This suggestion is further substantiated by my recent discovery at Abusir of an inscription that says its pyramidion was cased with white gold (electrum) -- (Zahi Hawass).

That's exactly what I was thinking of when I wrote: "...we have more contemporary inscriptional evidence that pyramidions and obelisks were covered with gold."

But you know, for the life of me I can never seem to remember that queen. Thanks for the reminder, wysingm. Wink
