Talatat Block Bearing a Possible Image of Nefertiti Discovered

Minister of Culture Farouk Hosni announced in March 2009 that an archaeological team from the Vitelli Papyrological Institute of the University of Florence has found a talatat block dating to the Amarna period at Sheikh ‘Ibada. The block, re-used in a Christian Church, has a uninscribed relief depicting the image of an Amarna queen wearing a vulture headdress, believed to be possibly an image of Akhenaten’s wife Nefertiti. There is a photograph of the block on Zahi Hawass’ website.

For some reasson I can't seem to access the blog Crying or Very sad

I remember seeing the image last week though. It's in the more traditional style if I remember correctly. I wonder who the possible candidates could be? It should be either Nefertiti or Tiye I presume.

The site - Sheikh Ibada - is near Minya and I think this is near Herrmopolis?

I guess this means the talatat likely originated from Amarna?

I was wondering: are talatats mainly associated with Amarna, or are there also talatats from Karnak? I think there may be small blocks at thebes as well?

Surprising--I get an "access denied" message when I try to go to the site, also.
Without seeing it, it's impossible to make any comments on who it might be. As anneke say, possibilities are Nefertiti, Tiye--wouldn't Kiya also be in the running, along with Meritaton?
Weren't talatat also discovered in one of the pylons at Karnak? I seem to remember reading something like that at one time!

Yes Minya (el Minya) is close to the site of Hermopolis.

I was wondering about that too, but they are usually not depicted with the long tripartite wig and the vulture headdress I think.

There are some depictions of Nefertiti with the long wig with the vulture headdress, but I think those are fairly rare in Amarna. I can think of her shown that way in one of the boundary stela.

The combination of the traditional depiction (facial features reminded me more of those from the end of Amenhotep III's reign) and the wig/headdress made me wonder where the talatat came from originally.

I think a depiction of a goddess may be rather unlikely?

Probably so, information on the site implies that all stories from Hawass' site must be fed to you via e-mail or RSS feed.

This talatat is not very Amarna-ish.

Isn't a 'talatat' automatically "Amarna-ish"? Or was it used afterward as well?

You're right. Talatat itself is "Amarna-ish"

I meant the style used. There is not the distorted elongated face. This queen is depicted in a more traditional way.

I wonder if that places it very much to the beginning or much more towards the end of the Amarna period? Or if the almost caricature style of the Amarna period was used side by side with more traditional depictions?
