Ouch. That stung. Shocked
I hate it when I do that. Razz
You're right, and about the Seymour-clan as well.

i've never heard of the people finding protestantism on their own. i was always told, and read by people like antonia fraser, david starkey, etc, that henry used his mammoth power to bring rome to its knees, and then kick it out. i thought it was his desire to have a male heir by anne boleyn, that made his determination set in stone. i had no idea he used the people themselves to make it happen. and im not sure i believe it, because the ordinary people did not agree with henry divorcing queen catherine and marrying anne boleyn. and they were against the common bible being in english at first. by the time mary I was queen, the people were protestant, except in the north, and they stayed that way, even though she burned like 300 people in her reign.

Protestant convictions were at first a common people's thing though. In Switzerland, Germany, France and Holland it's easy to see how Protestant variations originated in small towns, peasant societies, often distanced from larger cities. Out of personal piety or "conveniance", royals and nobility basically followed their subjects. Consider the people best known for advancing protestant convictions: sons of millers, local pastors, people who would have been unknown if not for their efforts in creating a new kind of church. Calvin, Zwingli, Luther, ... If looking at its origins, you cannot negate protestantism to have initially been a people's movement, even in more conservative England, no matter how it was further advanced. All I want to say is: there was an exisiting basis for Henry's actions. It didn't all come "from above".
