|
|
the photo i have attached here is one i took whilst at Karnak Temple. I am not quite sure what it is exactly. It is clearly some sort of record, as i can work out the numbers 2,3,12, 21, 30, etc.
My hieroglyph knowledge is rather limited to saying that at the top of the photo in the grid i can see what seems to be Pr-s-n (per-es-en?), possibly d-p-t (depet?), sa-t (daughter maybe), but as you can see, i am struggling a bit.
I need to pass this on to those of you who may Karnak better than me and especially the Hieroglyphic content involved...
What is being recorded and why... I look forward to any help you can provide me here...

It reminds me of a list of gifts, made by Ramesses III in the temple of Medinet Habu.
My first guess would be it's indeed a record of gifts, made to the Karnak temple.
The glyphs don't strike me as Ramesside though? First guess would be they're older.
Would you happen to remember where exactly you took this picture? _________________ "Leave him in error who loves his error."

Segereh,
The location as i remember it was starting at the scarab statue (originally located at the temple of Amenhotep III), by the sacred lake. Go west (if you are looking at an aerial view), towards the outer wall of the Amun- Re precinct and it was located somewhere in this area.
Just behind the enclose wall (slightly further west again), as i remember it were headless (approx 16 foot tall) Osiride statues.
If this doesn't help, i can try to be clearer,
thanks _________________ Beloved of Hathor, Chief of Thebes

The photo shows a fragment of a carved list of Thutmose III.
He recorded some festivals and festival offerings.
There are listed some kinds of bread, quantities and total volume:
Explication
dp.d-bread, ratio for baking based on 5 bushels

Lost track of this thread.
Aset... That's some very nice work there.
Styler: the headless Osiride statues would be those of the temple of Ramesses III.
Would this then be from the East exterior wall? _________________ "Leave him in error who loves his error."

Aset- Wow!!
Not just for the suberb response to my post, but your presentation skills are fantastic. Thank you so much- that was extremely useful. You have really helped me out, thanks. The link is also very useful indeed. I now even have the name of the Pharaoh who commissioned it. Do you know what festivals it describes? Opet?
Segereh- i should have set my orientation as looking from above and with the 1st pylon behind you, looking towards the 2nd pylon. That would have given a better interpretation of where "West" was, etc. Sorry for the confusion.
That site, Didgital Karnak is wonderful. I just spent 1/2 an hour getting lost in their archive.
No- it was not the temple of Rameses III. the closest i can get is between the Sacred lake and pylons 5 & 6. Memories are fading fast.... _________________ Beloved of Hathor, Chief of Thebes

That's oh so true...
Could these be the Osiride statues you mentioned before?
Those come from the "Contra Temple".
Again according to Digital Karnak:
(...) located east of the Akhmenu between the eastern obelisks of Hatshepsut. The temple opened to the east.
The low screen walls of the building's façade were interspersed with six square pillars fronted by Osiride statues.
(...) The building's wide front hall led to a series of small chambers, inside which scenes showed the king standing
before offering tables dedicated to the gods Amun and Min.
Don't injure your memory, but could this be closer? _________________ "Leave him in error who loves his error."

My head hurts... so I am going in a different direction with this. The Contra Temple on the Digital Karnak site looks good but one of my statues has a head...
Here's my beautiful wife...

...and here is me (not appreciating how much of a Tourist i look, but it seemed a great idea at the time...)

and lastly, this picture was taken directly BEFORE the wall of records, as beautifully illustrated by Aset...Looks like the pillars in your photo...

The reconstructions seem similar too.

Aset- again, i cannot thank you enough for your help. You're inspiring in your knowledge and an asset to this site.
This gives me so much more than i had hoped. I am so glad that 1) i asked for help and 2) that i have been able to share my research with you (although you did all the work).

Yes- i get it, i get it completely. Due to the fact i have yet to enroll in any particular course in Egyptology i do not have any specific area, so i am just hungry to know as much as i can find out. If there is any way i can help you at any time- just let me know. I will certainly sprinkle a lot of randomness into any help i can give, but i can assure you from the off that i will join you on your journey into the oblivion which is the search of knowledge- especially when related to my favourite subject- Egypt. _________________ Beloved of Hathor, Chief of Thebes
