Hey Everyone!

I am taking a History of World Art class and we are currently covering Egyptian art. Does anyone know if there were specific designs of Amulets that were used for different levels of hierarchy when a person was mummified? Also, does a different color of Amulets signify anything?

Here is a website you can check out to take a look at the Amulet that we looked at for class http://www.britishmuseum.org/explore/online_tours/egypt/mummy_the_inside_story/amulets.aspx

Thanks for your help!!

We are talking about more than 3000 years of history ... different eras with different religious traditions in detail. For example the so called "palace burials" from the MK (12th Dynasty) contained in or next to the coffin articles, particularly sceptres, in real life just used by Gods and Kings (bent staff, scourge, was-sceptre, etc.). On the so-called "Gerätefries" (figurative representations of the grave goods) in the box coffins of the MK even royal cloth and crowns are shown. This will probably hang together with the country-wide spreading of the Osiris-faith.

I think that there were in the choice of the raw materials quite differences. The so called "Book of the Dead" does not only describe kind and place of the amulette on the mummy, it gives also data of the material. For sure not everyone could afford expensive and precious raw materials. Form, color and magic spells had to be enough in these cases.

As mentioned above, color and material were prescribed by the Book of the Dead. A good overview to the topic offer Ikram / Dodson : The mummy in ancient Egypt - Equipping the dead for eternity. - London: Thames & Hudson, 1998. - ISBN : 0-500-05088-0. - 352 p., from page 144 :
