In response to kmt-sheh's post of the 21 March there are a few points that should be noted.

Petrie's survey of the Great Pyramid was as a result of his father's contact with Piazzi Smyth, the Astronomer Royal for Scotland and his theories of the "Pyramid Inch" and associated measurements that he believed gave insight the origins of the Hyksos and other religious matters. Petrie's father planned to travel to Giza and conduct a survey to confirm Smyth's theories and when he prevaricated Flinders travelled alone to Egypt to undertake the work. He quickly discarded Smyth's thesis and produced the most accurate survey of the Great Pyramid at that time. It still forms the basis of what we know today.

Carter is widely acknowledged as one of the finest archaeological draughtsmen ever to have worked in Egypt. During his time with Petrie he did not make a very good impression on the great man who decided that Carter's preoccupation with sketching the local flora and fauna would prevent him ever making himself into a competent archaeologist. After Carter's resignation from the Service des Antiquites it was his artistic skills that allowed him to remain in Egypt, this artistic talent may also explain Carter's sharp eye for antiquities that gave him additional funds and fostered his association with Lord Carnarvon, he acted as an agent in buying items from the dealers in Luxor and Cairo.
