What is the likelihood that the feather is not a feather but a stone or blade shaped to exhibit one? Considering the power they placed towards mining stones could it also be the it was a stone which held power by Maat herself? It could have been a gift from Heka even. However if your soul was to be weighed could it not be done in battle? Its only a speculation of mine but I am curious if the feather was only a feather held by Maat considering the color change and size in the pictures online.

Simply : not present. Neither in text nor in image or in the mythology of the Ancient Egyptians, there are even in the beginning such a possibility of interpretation.

Greetings, Lutz.

Here Lutz is quite correct: H6, the ostrich feather, which is part of Ma'at's iconography, is known from the time of the Pyramid Texts as /Swt/, for a reference to a feather (See Pyr. 1566).

Phonetically, this makes H6 as /Sw/, as when used to refer to the air-deity, Shu. In Ma'at's case, as Gardiner (1957: 474) noted, it's used as an ideogram as a substitute to her usual representation as a female deity sporting a ostrich-feather headdress.

Interestingly, the H6 determinative is NOT used when referring to the adjectival form of /mAa/, "true" or other related terms. It likely has to do with Ma'at's quality of "harmony/balance" which attached the H6 feather to her iconography.

It is strange to me that Ostrichs were in Egypt. Does anyone know if there is an ostrich heiroglyph, I think this would be plain evidence that it is indeed an Ostrich feather of Maat, and it is a feather too.
