I stumbled on this word for mourning woman, because I can't recognize last hieroglyph. Also I checked many websites and books, even the source Faulkner mentioned in his dictionary (source is W. Budge Book of the Dead), and I didn't succeeded in finding it in Gardiner' extended sign list. Do you know what hieroglyph is this?

Here is the side-by-side Budge's dictionary (as a source) and Faulkner's dictionary:

Thank you in advance Smile

Rainer Hannig : Großes Handwörterbuch Ägyptisch-Deutsch (2800-950 v. Chr.) - Die Sprache der Pharaonen. - [Marburger Edition, 4th revised ed.]. - [Kulturgeschichte der Antiken Welt 64]. - Mainz am Rhein : Philipp von Zabern, 2006. - ISBN : 3805317719; 9783805317719. - XLIV, 1475 p., 20 p. of plates [maps (colour)] has a "Sonderzeichenliste" (list of special characters).

There it is "HSZ 12 - sitzende trauernde Frau mit offenen Haaren" (seated mourning woman with open hair). It can also be "j3kbt – Klageweib" (mourner).

Greetings, Lutz.

"... The main character list [based on Gardiner] have been completely redesigned by Petra Vomberg and Orell Witthuhn, especially the more concrete descriptions of the character. Petra Vomberg has also compiled an explanatory character list of all other characters (special characters list) that are used in HL1. ..."

Following this, from the preface of the Marburger Edition, 4th revised, of "Großes Handwörterbuch Ägyptisch-Deutsch (2800-950 v. Chr.)" (HL1, 2006), I would say there is no Gardiner number for this sign?

Greetings, Lutz.

Yes, there is no Gardiner number (B...) for this sign.

The number ist HSZ 12.

HSZ = Hannig Sonderzeichen

Thank you both. Does that dictionary keep Gardiners codes for known hieroglyphs?

Yes, Hannig keeps (as well all after him ?) and expands the list considerably.
