Guess who's back, back again Smile Haven't really indulged on this forum for quite some time, hoping to get back into it again. Always love a good ancient Egypt discussion.

So I was wondering if there's anything that would suggest that the ancient Egyptians had knowledge that alcohol consumption during pregnancy caused alcohol fetal syndrome amongst other conditions?

It's an interesting thought. nowadays we take all this knowledge for granted forgetting that the ancient people did not have this same extensive knowledge on medicinal matters like we do today.

The Fetale Alkoholsyndrom (FAS), although certainly as old as the consumption of alcohol itself, was described as a developmental disorder due to alcohol consumption during pregnancy for the first time in 1968 by P. Lemoine in France, 1973 again in the USA by K. L. Jones and D. W. Smith. The diagnostic criteria have since been essentially unaffected by the occurrence of a plurality of typical physical, cognitive and social development disorders.

Following the entry "Trunkenheit" ("drunkenness") by Helmut Brunner in the "Lexikon der Ägyptologie" (Vol. VI, 1986, col. 773-777), according to which drunkenness appears more or less positively evaluated in nearly all known ancient Egyptian sources, I would say no. The article is in German, but if desired I can post it here.

Greetings, Lutz.

Salah El-Kholi : Missbilligung von Alkohol im altägyptischen Alltag?. - In: Annales du Service des Antiquités de l'Égypte - ASAE 75. - 1999-2000. - pp. 211-222

gives sources that warn of the negative aspects and of excessive alcohol consumption (most from the so-called "wisdom-books"). Also here is no specific reference to / for pregnant women or for children mentioned.

Greetings, Lutz.
