I was in Egypt to attend the 8th International Congress of Egyptologists in March and April of 2000, so during that visit most of my time was spent in Lower Egypt at the congress (which was at the Mena House, at Giza).

My department is running a dig at Tell el-Masha'la (eastern Nile Delta) this summer though, so I going to apply for selection later this month.

Well I've been to Egypt 3 times; and I'm thinking of going again in November. I can't get anyone to go with me, so I decided to go alone.
The advice I can give to women travelling by themselves are:
avoid crowds - especially American + Israeli ones....sorry Mad
if you want to go to "tourist spots" do it early in the morning or late afternoon
do NOT talk to strange men - they will try to pick you up and you'll never get rid of them
if men talk to you don't answer
and most important: think about how you dress. Minis and small tops are
a nono.

bHi,
I have been to Egypt three times, 1982,1984,&1987. I love the people the most. I also love to walk through Karnak. The people are very warm and friendly. When my friend and I were returning from shopping the lights went out. We were very uneasy because we couldn't see anything. Then we heard people whispering to us NubianAmericans come over here, the lights will come on again. People were in a park or square just sitting, and eating out in the cool of the evening. We went and sat down and had a wonderful conversation with the family we were sitting with. They asked lots of questions of us and our impressions of Aswan. When the lights came on we continued to our hotel.
I hope to make it back to Egypt
efore too late. Laughing

Hi to everyone, I'm new on this forum, and happy to have found it.

To get back to the original posting... I have been to Egypt, during February 2002. My wife and I stayed at the Mercure Coralia in Luxor, on the Nile Corniche. I got some excellent photos from our balcony of the Nile in the foreground, and the necropolis area in the background. The biggest single thrill for us was staying for a night in the village at Sheil abd el Qurna, in the home of a family we befriended. Earlier the same day we had been to Deir el Medina and the Ramesseum, and spent part of the evening in the Ramesseum Resthouse getting mildly tipsy on Stella beer with 3 villagers - a priceless experience, and a memorable day.

We intend going back to Luxor later this year, probably in October; we have stayed in touch with our friends in the village and we'll be seeing them again I'm sure!

I'd recommend a trip to Luxor to anyone - the people are friendly, the weather is obviously lovely, and as for the monuments, temples, tombs etc....... suffice to say that although I'd read books and seen pictures and generally had taken an interest in the whole subject, the real thing exceeded all expectations, I can't praise it highly enough. As regards picking a favourite from all the ancient sites we visited...... it's a hard choice but for me the Ramesseum had a very special atmosphere...we visited it around 6.30 pm and we were the only people there apart from the two gatekeepers and an old man who appointed himself as our guide.

I have never been to Egypt except in dreams that I can remember. It was a nice and strange experience in those dreams. I remember exploring the inside of the pyramid like Mario or Zelda. It felt like something was unfinished about the dreams.
The part I like most about Egypt is the writing.
