That's what i was wondering. I've heard of shukran but not la shukran.

My mum hates boats and gets sea sick very easily so if I went on hols to Egypt with her she'd rather not do the cruise. Thing is, i want to see the sights-and not just the pyramids and Luxor, Karnak and the valley of the kings, but also the temples/monuments not many people have heard of but look just as spectacular as the well known ones.

Also, food wise, how do you prevent getting ill? Do you not drink the water or eat dairy products? And do cruises cater for veggies?

Another thing-do you have to tip everyone there?

I think La Shukran means 'go away' or 'no thank you', although I'm probably wrong.

I was wondering about the food myself, some of my family are such picky eaters it really limits the places we can go(although we probably couldn't go to Egypt anyways Sad )

You're right, 'La Shukran' means, 'No thank you'.
Go away is 'hatemshi'.

Food should not be a problem, either in the towns or on the cruise boats; there is a wide choice, including many vegetarian dishes.

Your mother will be okay on a cruise, as the Nile does not have a tide and therefore no waves. I suffer badly from seasickness, but never on the Nile.

For various reasons cruises are, in my opinion, definitely the best way to see Egypt for the first time. Smile

No, only use the water to wash and clean your teeth.

More or less - usually one Egyptian pound (about 10p)

I only drink bottled water on hols anyway, especially after the time when i went to Italy and I got the most awful stomach bug after drinking iced water in a glass that must have come from a tap!

10p's not bad. In Tunisia I swear my mum tipped more-when she had to. she tried her best to avoid tipping at all costs!!!

Exactly, give that man a prize,"la"meaning no is usually sufficient, but for a bit more emphasis "la shukran" will do the trick.otherwhise known as no thank you,go away, leave me alone. Laughing

Don't mention Tunisia, Mad I think I spend more on tipping than I did for my holiday - it was the first time I had travelled to a country where tipping and bartering was involved and I was useless at it.

Got the hang of it now though Wink

yeah the giant ant was around the pool side,in the sheraton, food was amazing by the way,but i have the constitution of an ox so not much problems food wise for me.the nile cruise as jan says is not a problem for anyone who worries about sickness,i fell asleep in the afternoon a couple of times after trips, and woke up with the boat sailing ,and im a light sleeper and believe me i didnt know we were moving, and my window was on the water line, also we set sail for dendera from aswan if i remember correcctly, which meant starting and stopping at esna lock at night and then sailing right thru the night and you wouldnt have known you were sailing.

you wont believe this one but i swear its true, there were people who never left the boat, every time they saw armed tourist police they took an attack of the frights and decided not to do any trips, the last one,the convoy at dendera, had them almost needing smelling salts,it was hilarious, they just shouldnt have been there.they should have been in skegness or blackpool ,were they would have probably have been mugged.a soldier at philae was very impressed by my knowledge of his weapon,a heckler and koch mp5,so much so that he thought i was a soldier or policeman back home,he took the magazine out and let me handle the machine pistol, well away from prying eyes of course.
