I am not surprised: the al-Ahram article points out the decision was made strictly on the fact that tourism is down so much at the moment that adding additional expense would defeat the purpose of people visiting Egypt.
I thought it mad when they said they would raise the visa rates to $60 and start on March 1 of this year. When that was delayed to October, I knew saner heads were prevailing.
This last change says that reality finally had set in: you cannot get tourists to visit Egypt if you raise the visa rates so high in one rise. I understand that everyone, from ministers to the guides who greet you at monuments, had all weighed in on how bad the increased visa rates were.
One thing you can say about Egypt: they should know their audience and react accordingly. _________________ Katherine Griffis-Greenberg

The Egyptian Minister of Tourism had to listen to violent criticism at the International Trade Fair for Tourism (ITB) in February this year in Berlin, from the vendors of travels to Egypt....
