Other than the famous Oedipus Rex, does anyone know of any other Ancient Greek, Roman or Egyptian literature that the SPhinx appears in, or plays a role in?

Also, does anyone know of any good academic books on the Sphinx and its religious import, its symbolism and its character?

Thank-you Very Happy

I'm not sure about the classical sources, but we have a booklist for pyramids and sphinx here:

Thank-you, that looks like it could be helpful. I'm going to go and give it a browse.

In Sumer they also have depictions of the sphinx creature. I can look for some references to the Sumerian sphinx if you would like.

The best book - by far - for scholarly information on the Sphinx, comes from the Egyptologist who spent years on excavating the Sphinx from the 1920's - 40's:

Hassan, S. 1949. The Sphinx: Its History in the Light of Recent Excavations. Cairo: Government Press.

For late medieval sources on the Sphinx, one needs to read Arabic, which explains the loss of the Sphinx's nose in 1368 in

al-Maqrizi, Taqi al-Din Ahmad ibn `Ali ibn `Abd al-Qadir ibn Muhammad, and Gaston Wiet. 1924. el-Mawa`iz wa'l-i`tibar fi dhikr el-khitat wa'l-athar. Volume 4: Deuxieme partie, chapt. L-XCIV. Memoires publies par les membres de l'Institut francais d'archeologie orientale du Caire 49. Cairo: Imprimerie de l'Institut francais d'archeologie orientale, section 2:415.

In English, one can see a translation of this section in

Haarmann, Ulrich. 1980. Regional Sentiment in Medieval Islamic Egypt. Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies 43:64.

Something I want to ask to add to the post, where is the sphinx known to pose a riddle? Other than Harry Potter and the Mystery of the Sphinx documentary, I don't know where this idea sprang from. Anyone know?
