Hi all,
I have just posted up a guide on mastaba 17 that some may find of interest.

I had been inside it last week. I thought I'd die! Such a wormhole...

Yes terrible ... You need nerves and force for it. Where have you been else? Tell us something ... Are there any pictures?

Greetings, Lutz.

Indeed, but a well built wormhole Smile

I think it would be easy for the authorities to make access easier, by utilising the cutting made by Petrie. They could clear out some of the debris from this cutting, and build a retaining wall and steps down to the descending passage; though its unlikely to happen, as in the scheme of things, its not seen as an important site.

Unfortunately, I wasn't in other Meydum monuments but the pyramid and Mastaba 17. Army and police inforcement don't make such activities exactly pleasant. My guide had even to lie about my nationality to avoid further embarrassments. I'll post the pics later

I was there once, in November 2004. If I remember right it was in this year, that the place was free open again for the public after decades of military restricted area :

Lutz, according to my guide, those soldiers mindset informs that once you are Brazilian and Brazil lays in the American continent, thus you are AMERICAN, what can provide you big problem, specially countryside, and I started my tour at the same day of Sinai's terrorist attack!

I bought ASADE's "egyptological" tour, which included Giza, Sakkara (Step Pyramid, Serapeum, Old and New Kingdom's tombs), Meydum, El Amarna, Beni Hassan, Dendera, Speos Artemidos, Luxor, El-Kab, Esna, Aswan, Philae and Abu Simbel. It was actually a great adventure, with some places (like Amarna) only with me, the guide, driver, guardian and soldier at the place. Military apparatus really keep tourists away.
