" This Bread Was Made Using 4,500-Year-Old Egyptian Yeast " (smithsonian.com - Jason Daley, 08.08.2019)

Seamus Blackley, best known as one of the minds behind the Xbox, is a hardcore amateur baker and Egyptologist. Recently, he decided to combine his two hobbies. As Alix Kroeger at the BBC reports, along with University of Queensland archaeologist and ancient brewing expert Serena Love, he negotiated access to 4,500-year-old Old Kingdom vessels used to bake bread and make beer from the Peabody Essex Museum and Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. ...

Reminds me of a few years ago, when the Ohio Historical Center hosted a mini-seminar on Egypt. The centerpiece was the facial reconstruction of a mummy that has been in the Center's possession for something like a century, but she had never been unwrapped; the project used axial tomography and 3D visualization and printing technology to "print" a precise replica of her skull and neck, which became the basis for a clay facial reconstruction by a forensic artist. (Fascinating stuff.)

One of the sidelights was what was billed as a beer "made with ancient Egyptian methods," but unfortunately they went ahead and added hops during the process. They admitted that the Egyptians did not have hops, but they thought it would be better. Kind of ruined it for me, as I was hoping to taste something at least semi-authentic.
