I saw this show the other night on the top ten archaeological discoveries of all time (Tut came in first by the way) In at number 8 was a merchant ship dating to the bronze age (a verrrrrry long time ago) but onboard where trade items from all over and the ship was found In Greece if I belive correctly and the ship was Canaite or macedonian. Now this proved that the ancients where trading literatley all around Africa, the middle east, and Europe as early as the bronze age! Now I was thinking how far did Egyptian trade routes actualy go? Im starting to think that its not so imposible to belive they may have traded with India, Africa, and maybe even China! Lets hear what you all think _________________ "A society that burns books will eventualy burn its people," |

The link's broken...
The egyptians did trade with the Middle Eastern civilisations such as the babylonians etc, and the Greeks, but surely not India and China? I haven't heard of Egyptian artefacts being found in those places... |

thanx Kev I dont think its that imposible that they traded that far just because no Egyptian artifacts where found in these places dosent mean they dident trade. Egyptians liked incense and spices and would go great lengths to get them! And India still makes a lot of money today of these things! _________________ "A society that burns books will eventualy burn its people," |

Yeah, India's always been trading 'exotic' items with the rest of the world. That's why Europe took so much interest in it in the Imperial Age. Had to start somewhere... though I think it would be later dynasties, I can't imagine it being too early. _________________ "I stand like Horus. I sit like Ptah. I am strong like Thoth. The article says they traded with Africa, and up to Persia. Persia's not far from India...nothing on China though... |

Dunno where Punt is, actually; all my Google searches came up with foreign languages I can't read and something about Holland. If taking control of Nubia opened up a land route to it though, I'd assume it's South of Egypt, in Africa somewhere.
I suppose it's possible that Asians came to Egypt, they're described often enough. Though I don't know whether the Egyptians went to Asia, at least not that far. _________________ "I stand like Horus. I sit like Ptah. I am strong like Thoth. Mighty like Tem. I walk with my legs. Here's a reference to Punt:
http://www.ethiopianhistory.com/pre-aksum/punt.html
There are some interesting reliefs in Hatshepsut's temple at Deir-el Bahari depicting the land of Punt. This includes houses on stilts.
I do believe that the Queen of Punt visited Hatshepsut. There is a relief depicting her anyway.
I did look at google, and there are a lot of dutch sites. "Punt" means "point" or "dot" in Dutch. I was born and raised in the Netherlands and Dutch is my native language, and these hits have nothing to do with the land of Punt. I just thought I would check. (So we're not missing anything there.) |

That earlier topic on trade with China just reminded me of something I have read recently but cant remember exactly what - my memory is so embarrassing.
I had'nt previously thought that the Egyptians had contact as far away as China untill I read this. I'm reading half a dozen different books at the moment I'll try and track down the right one |
