besides reading the grammars

... i swear by flash cards hieroglyphs on front from and english on back

start with the phonetic glyphs you learn the sounds first.
When you get to learning the words you can say the word when you are reading the hieroglyphs then you say the word in english.

oh and knowing the vocabulary first helps immensly before moving into grammar

The grammar is the hardest part to learn. (it is why i got an Aminus last semester Sad )

I can definitely recommend the book by Mark Collier and Bill Manley as well, they still give lectures throughout England and the Benelux by the way. For the rest, if u HAVE to have a book on hieroglyphics, u should always try to get your hands on the volumes, published by Gardiner. Those are have-to-haves.

Next to the volumes by Gardiner, u might also like to try finding 'Middle Egyptian, an introduction to the language and culture of hieroglyphics' by James P. Allen. Very recent (2000) and more up-to-date than Gardiner (1957), though a little bit harder to work with.
