First off, I'm not asking if the Egyptians had shows like Blind Date, lol

I'm asking about their calendars. I've always assumed that they used dates like this:

23rd day of the third month of Innundation, year 3 of Thoth the Greatest (Wink)

Yet, I keep seeing websites and people saying that they used a date that depended on astronomical observations, the method of which I'm unclear on.
Which of the two is correct? If both, which would the Egyptians have used? I'd expect priests used the latter most, if anyone.

I didn't know the Egyptians dated their stuff precisely like that, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did-after all, they invented the 365 day calendar. Astronomical dating, hmmmmm...could that be related to sirius or something, I read something about dating according to the heliacal rise of Sirius, but I'm not sure where.

Yes, I think Sirius is involved, though again, how exactly I don't know... Question

There's some info on
http://www.mnsu.edu/emuseum/prehistory/egypt/dailylife/calendar.html

They had 3 seasons:
Akhet which lasted from June 21st to October 21st
Proyet which lasted from October 21st to February 21st
Shomu which lasted from February 21st to June 21st.

Each season was divided into 4 months, each of which lasted 30 days.

There was some way they accoounted for the "extra" 5 days (don't remember how).

The rising of Sirius supposedly announced the start of the new year.

Here's another really nice site:
http://showcase.netins.net/web/ankh/calendar1.html

It has a picture of the Egyptian Zodiac, and a list of the Months!

Akhet (winter) Season:
Thuthi (month of Thoth)
Paopi (month of Ptah)
Hethara (month of Hathor)
Koiak (month of Sekhmet)

Peret (Spring) Season
Tybi (month of Min)
Mechir (month of Rekhur)
Pamenot (month of Amun-Ra)
Parmutit (month of Renenutet)

Shemu (Summer) Season
Pachons (month of Khonsu)
Payni (month of Horus)
Epipi (month of Wadjet)
Mesore (month of Heru-Khuiti)

The 5 extra days are:

1 July 14 Birthday of Wasir (Osiris)
2 July 15 Birthday of Heru-Dunawhy
3 July 16 Birthday of Set
4 July 17 irthday of Aset (Isis)
5 July 18 Birthday of Nebet-Het (Nephthys)

I get the impression that the Egyptians used the calendar just like we do. It was originally based on observations in astronomy, but once established I presume that you wouldn't have to keep staring at the sky.

here's another quote I found:
Quote:
Although the Egyptians had limited knowledge of mathematics, their first important discovery was the solar calendar of 365 days. In the 3rd Millennium B.C. the Egyptians created a calendar, which had 12 thirty-day months plus five additional days. The calendar helped the ancient Egyptians keep record of important festivals and to the flooding of the river Nile (Casson, Lionel. p146). The calendar was created with the brightest star Sirius in mind, which would rise once a year on the eastern horizon just before dawn (Casson, Lionel. p146). The river Nile always flooded whenever the star Sirius appeared (Casson, Lionel. p146). The Egyptians then made the beginning of their calendar start whenever Sirius first would appear (Casson, Lionel. p146). The Egyptian Calendar helped them keep track of important events, like the annual flooding of the Nile, and without the study of the stars in the sky, the calendar would not have existed.

Thanks for the links...very interesting! i love the astronomy related side of ancient Egypt...so fascinating.
So thanks to the egyptians, we have a 365 day calendar, but is it true that they invented the 24 hour day too? because I'm sure that was a sumerian invention, but I heard somewhere that the Egyptians did it first...

Yeah, thanks anneke, very handy Smile

I don't know who was the first to come up with 24 hour days and such, but I think that up till modern times, the most accurate measurement was done by the Mayans. They were off the actual time of a year given by atomic clocks by a fraction of a second, or something equally amazing. A website describing this would be handy too, lol

I've been having a discussion about leap years (since it was Feb 29) with some friends and they said that if we used the Mayan calendar, we wouldn't need leap years...
Hatshepsu-that Mayan 'end of the world' will supposedly happen in 2012!!!or that's what they say on countless 'doomsday' websites...

LMAO, I love those doomsday predictions. I'm just going to say that the world will end in February. Not specify a year, then no-one can complain when nothing happens. And if it doesn't happen in A February... who's gonna dispute me, lol?
Although, if the Mayans can get their year right to a mere fraction of a second, it makes you wonder what they knew that we don't...

lol, when it comes to my total destruction and annihilation I would definitely want to be surprised...
Really don't wanna see that one coming.

Did Egyptians believe in a type of doomsday?
I've never read anything about "the end of the world" in their writings.
