Fast-forward 3000 years and whenever historians are talking about America, it's states, it's towns, and it's rulers, they keep using the made up names that the foreigners gave them. Won't that get your goat?
To kmt's point earlier, we delve into this primarily for our own benefit. Being too strict on spelling and the like can distract from the enjoyment and enlightenment of the activity. I can pronounce Thutmose, I cant pronounce Djehutymose. Nor can I spell it without looking it up.

You have a point, but I am not in fear of offending any ancient Egytians (the time machine is down...AGAIN). Wink

the Arabic for "kohl" is al-kuhul, and from this old Arabic word comes the word "alcohol." By the 1700s alcohol came to mean any substance obtained by sublimation, and hence "quintessence." "Alcohol of wine" was thus the "quintessence of wine," produced by distillaton or rectification, and by the middle of the 18th century alcohol was being used on its own for the intoxicating ingredient in strong liquor.

That is interesting. Thanks for sharing.

It's pronounced JEH-HOO-TEE-MOSE. Now you can spell it and pronounce it, but most people still would have no idea what in the hell or who in the hell you're talking about. I'd stick with Tuthmose.

I see. It must be because his spaceship landed on top of it.
