We know they counted the night's hours with specific stars. They'd known about Sothic Cycle for centuries. Clearly the ancients had a very good idea of the movements of the heavens.

William McMurray asserts that Akhenaten may have decided to build Aketaten where he did is because of a solar eclipse which actually occured around that time.

My question is this:
Is it reasonable to assume that the Ancient Egyptians would have been able to predict the onset of such an event, much as we do now? It is so improbable that he would 'happen' to find himself in the path of a total solar eclipse. He was an ardent student in his youth wasn't he. Maybe he was close with the wise men who were planning a pilgrimage for the event. Unless we find out that he was definitely around for, or travelling through to some festival we might have reason to consider Akhenaten's motives and the scribes' astronomical understandings a little more closely.

I've read McMurray's ideas and they dont really hold much water. It is near to impossible to know with any certainty when exactly Akhenaten ruled, but even in rough terms he is off by about 50 years for him to have seen the Ugarit eclipse.

There is also a small problem of the eclipse being barely visible in Egypt. Egypt was at the very edge of the visible zone, while Ugarit (at the very edge of Egyptian influence) was in the totality path. Rare as they are, I dont see a some other eclipse being visible over Atenville just as Akhenaten was meandering by. A bit too convenient or Cecile B DeMille for me.

More than one egyptologist who has been there has stated that the sun crossing the moutains bears an uncanny resemblance to the aten glyph . Seems like a good enough sign from the sky to me. Smile

I have been there (I'm not an Egyptologist though) and the sight of the horizen hills is uncanny as a similarity to the akhet sign - they're like a pylon and stand out clear and concise - just as the mountain of Meretseger at Qurna looms over the Valley of the Kings.

As far as I know, I thought it was pretty much universally accepted that "Akhetaten" - Horizon of the Aten, was so named because of the sight of the Horizon as the Aten rose each morning?
