I wondered if anyone can recommend any good books on Egyptian Mythology? I remember quite a few years ago reading a book all about Greek Myths and I found it extremely interesting, but I've never been able to find a book containing Egyptian Myths collectively. All I've ever been able to find is odd stories from various books.
My main obsession with Egypt concerns the myths and religion in ancient times, so any input in this area would be very much appreciated. _________________

"Ancient Egypt", by Lorna Oakes and Lucia Gahlin, contains a very good section on Egyptian mythology, giving a full plot rundown of each myth and then setting it in context. Particuarly interesting is The Contendings Of Horus And Seth, because I never knew that some of that actually happened. The book's got great other sections as well, it's a great read.

Probably the best is the collection of Miriam Lichtheim, Ancient Egyptian Literature. They come in three volumes that are reasonably priced and cover literature from the Old and Middle Kingdoms (I), New Kingdom (II), and Late Period (III). Everything of note is in there. This is the collection to which the Egyptologists turn.
One I've also personally enjoyed was the first major compilation of ancient Egyptian myths, Popular Stories of Ancient Egypt, assembled and edited by none other than Gaston Maspero. It was originally published in the early 1880s so the language is a bit stiff and formal, but it's a terrific collection. _________________

Thanks for your help kmt_sesh I've been on a few UK internet sites and found the Miriam Lichtheim vol.1 book. The others aren't quite as easy to get, but I'm definately gonna keep on the look out for them, (I'll most likely be able to order them from a local book shop though).
The vol.1 book does sound very interesting, as I read the excerpt from the book on the link you provided
Thanks a lot, you've been a big help _________________

Glad I could be of service, Daughter_Of_SETI.
I never checked Amazon to see if they had all three, so that was my fault. They probably do sell all of the volumes, but sometimes with Amazon you have to go at it obliquely.
Try this page from the David Brown Book Co. This is another excellent source for books on the ancient Near East. Starting with the fourth title down all three of Lichtheims volumes are there. _________________

Thanks Elise, for the recommendation.
I've never been put off from reading children's books, some of my favourite books are kiddies books! _________________

I bought all three of the Lichtheim books on Amazon, it's been several years ago now, but at that time they had all three at a special price if you bought the set.
They're excellent reading, by the way. I'm sure you'll enjoy them very much. I particularly liked the translations of the love letters!
(guess I'm just an old softie at heart! ) |

Yeah, I bought the first two not long after Kmt_sesh recommended them, but I've not had time to read them yet (too much sudying).
Love letters, Osiris, ahhh! that's very sweet. Actually you've got me interested in getting them off the bookshelf. _________________
