I have a feeling I'm going to be posting a few more controversial/thought provoking topics soon because I've been seeing a lot of stuff recently that i need to get other's opinions on...

Ok, here's the question: I know the Egyptians sacrificed animals but did they sacrifice people too???

Disturbing thought, I know...but i did read something on a website today that I never heard of before and that disturbed me...it said that the priests of Isis used to drown virgin girls in the Nile to encourage flooding!!! I thought it was ludicrous (and I think this is from one of those fundamentalist/conspiracy sites anyway and they tend to be very biased) but what do you think? Has anyone else heard of this?

I don't know if this counts but they did publicly execute prisoners.

I'll have to check my books for references.

I know they used to chop the heads/hands off prisoners and foreign enemies but that's not human sacrifice really, that's more like capital/corporal punishment.

But I just want to know if this drowning thing is true...

I have never heard of sacrifice involving drowning. What's the story behind that? Which god or goddess was that associated with?

The only other thing I can think of is that I believe the Hyksos sacrificed people. But it depends on if you want to count them as Egyptian or not. Smile
I think they found human remains in the foundations for certain large buildings. (Sorry my memory is a bit vague on this.)

According to the site I saw this on, it was the 'priests of Isis' who drowned virgins to 'invoke the Nile flood'. It's the first time I heard about it too.
But, as I said before, the person writing it was probably biased and these people tend to get facts wrong...

Interesting article. I do now remember reading about the retainers being buried with some of the 1st dynasty kings and Queens.

What was with the "Shocked Rolling Eyes Shocked Rolling Eyes etc"?
(Just curious)

TourEgypt is usually pretty accurate. I don't have time to read the entire article on the spot, but I will definitely go back and read it at a more leasurely pace. Laughing

If a site does not site sources best not even look at the information. It is hard to know where it is coming, internet is a big place it is easy to get misdirected.
