|
|
I noticed the following entry in a newsblog:
"Seeking to rediscover the "avenue of sphinxes", an Egyptian mission found the first Luxor ’sphinx’. Secretary-General of the Higher Council of Antiquities Dr. Zahi Hawas said that the ’sphinx’ carries several carvings together with a royal "Kartouch". On his part, Samir Farag, Head of the City of Luxor, described the discovery as a turning point for Luxor".
This is the complete posting on the State Information Service website
(from: http://touregypt.net/TEBlog/egyptologynews/ )
Makes me wonder what is carved/ inscribed on this Sphinx.
I wonder if they are talking about this avenue of sphinxes:
Are there other ones?
I'm a bit puzzled by what they mean by the discovery of the first sphinx?
Anyone else have any ideas? _________________ Math and Art: http://mathematicsaroundus.blogspot.com/ |

I'm confused about this one myself. The avenue of sphinxes (your photo) is no new discovery. There's not much info available in any of the related links, and it's odd that they wouldn't even report the name found in the cartouche. I wonder if it's just another sphinx in the avenue or evidence of another such processional way? That would be big news. _________________

If you mean the sphinxes in the photo, then they are much later, dating to the 30th Dynasty. |

You're not so far off, kennethhirst. Maybe you were thinking of Amunhotep III, who was responsible for erecting much of the core of the Luxor temple as it stands today.
As Nekht-Ankh stated, the sphinxes of the processional way date to Dynasty 30--specifically to Nectanebo I, at the start of that dynasty. At least it is his cartouche you will find on these sphinxes, so it's possible they may date to a somewhat earlier time and he later usurped them, but I'm just throwing that out there for contemplation. _________________

Wilkinson's book is wonderful, isn't it? No library on ancient Egypt is complete without it. I find myself refering to it fairly often.

It was found in or near Luxor, wasn't it? Wouldn't that place it in the fourth nome? The information in anneke's link is very sketchy and brief and one doesn't get many details out of it. _________________
