Restauration is in store for the Sphinx.
"Restoration work on the noseless creature undertaken by the High Council for Antiquities is to focus on the beast's neck and chest, rendered fragile by the erosion of desert winds."
See:
very short article on Yahoo News
Another shortarticle at ndtv.com
Some of the info comes throught the egyptology blog maintained by Mark Morgan. On his blog is a picture of the sphinx. I don't know if that's a picture from a previous restauration or not.

I'm confused by restoration being started now. I thought the Sphnix just went through extensive restoration work. I had seen photographs of the work in progress--I think it was in the 90's, but no mention of anything being done later than the 80's. |

I don't know either why they have decided to do more restaurations.
I will have to look around a bit to see if there's more information out there.
On an aside: You're e member of EEF too aren't you Osiris? You must have seen the April 1st post claiming the facelift was designed to make the Sphinx look like Hosni Mubarak?
Somehow that comes to mind every time I read about work on the Sphinx |

Yes, I get posts from EEF. But no, I didn't see the one about making the Sphnix look like Mubarak, thank heavens! Surely, it couldn't be true. |

Oh damn, that made me laugh all over again. I got such a good laugh out of that one from the EEF piece anneke shared with me. I have since signed up with the EEF and have been getting posts daily. And I too was surprised by this restoration news. But the short piece to which anneke linked us specifically mention the head and neck, so maybe these portions were not treated in the most recent work. _________________

All the modern day hazards the Sphinx faces are quite off putting... |

So how are they gonna restore the nose? Since there has been a whole controversy with what race/ethnicity the ancient egytains were..will the nose pertain to animal- type features or more african type of nose? _________________ "The differences in character of the pharaohs are not determined by the nature of their souls, for all kingly souls are godlike, but by the gods themselves" |

The "repaired" face would probably look something like this, seeing as how this is most likely the king after whom the Sphinx was fashioned:

Are they restoring the nose? I thought they were just refining the face to make it look less eroded but I don't see any mentions of a nose job.
I don't know, but I don't think they should add a brand new nose-it seems almost fake on an ancient sculpture like that. There's a fine line between restoration and adding modern bits to it...if they had an ancient model of the nose it would be better but afaik the true nose hasn't been found... _________________ High-Priestess of Isis, Hereditary Princess, Lady of Philae, Favourite of Osiris, the Lord of Abydos, Daughter of Horus, Chantress of Bastet, Superior of the Kitty Litter

I doubt they'd be able to replace the nose. I don't think they should, even if they were able to. The Sphinx has undergone extensive restoration and conservation work in the past, so this is probably a continuation of those efforts.
I hope so, anyway. I don't want to see the poor Sphinx with some silly-looking artifical nose stuck in the middle of its face. _________________

Ahhhh! Michael Jackson? Hey, we want people to go to the Sphinx...not run away from it in abject terror!
Now you've got my evil side going. I had to see how it might look:
Oh my. I am frightened. My sincerest apologies to the people of Egypt, past and present. _________________
