If your legal names is Annie, then why are you called Anneke? I don't even know if I prounounce "Anneke" right. I always thinks it's sounds like: "Anne-neck" (?). Idea Shocked

On the names "trail" again "hattie" Idea How to pronounce Anneke's name, you made quite a good start actually think an "e" behind the 'ck' and then speak it as one word (fast that is)

My legal name is Anneke at this point. I have been called that my entire life. When young I was legally called Annie, but never went by that name. (The why of that is a long story and way too personal for a forum).

If you have heard of the pro golfer Annika Sorenstam then you have a pretty good idea of how my name is pronounced. It's a relatively common name in northern Europe I guess

I will remove this part of the discussion to the general section as it does not really belong in this thread.

LOL I have two sisters and none of us go by the name our father registered at city hall after our births Very Happy

Part of the reason is all of us are named after relatives and at that point you need what we in the Netherlands call a "roep naam" - you "calling name".

I think you see the same thing in Ancient Egypt btw. There are people with alternate names: Nebneteru called Tenry (High Priest of Amun), Amenhotep called Huy (Viceroy of Nubia, and another one was Vizier).

There are quite a few examples like that. There's a discussion going on on EEF about a vizier from the old kingdom Merefnebef who apparently had 4 or 5 names?

LOL If I were into fringe I no doubt could spin some theory now how this 'linguistic evidence" proves there are close connections between the Ancient Egyptians and the Dutch. No doubt an ancient colony ....

its evident among genealogy too, specially jewish families. when i asked my aunt about her grandfather and his family she gave me a list of flowers, which his sisters were known by......well ill tell u, unravelling that family took quite some time. then theres of course, my gran's aunt 'nina' pronounced 'nine-a' who turned out to be lorraine/lorreina maude! so having nicknames that make no sense is kinda ancient.

No it isn't. In that respect, Dutch is a remarkable language as the last 'e' could have been pronounced like you thought, but it is pronounced as the last 'e' in "remarkable" hanging towards the 'u' in "fur"
