Mkay, I have a project for my art history class and I am doing it on Amarna art. I know that later in his reign Akhenaten had both names and images of Amun and other gods destroyed. I was hoping that someone could point me in the direction of such images since I know they exist I just cant seem to find any. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks. Smile

I found one in a google book:
link to page

There's mention of defacing the name of Amun on this stela in Liverpool (now lost)

You're right, it is hard to find images showing this erasure. They are often mentioned in passing in descriptions of objects from the ealry 18th dynasty.

Fallen_Angel,

Quote : was hoping that someone could point me in the direction of such images since I know they exist I just cant seem to find any.

Here are some examples :

Stele of Wesi
The inscription gives the names and titles of Wesi and Ipuy along with a prayer invoking offerings for their spirits in the afterlife. Ipuy was a Chantress of Amen-Ra; the name Amen has been chiselled out at the bottom of the third column from the left, part of Akhenaten's campaign against this god.

Statue of Amenhotep III as a Fertility God
Amun has been chiseled out (left side of the picture).

Nice pictures!
That's the temple of Hatshepsut in Deir-el-Bahari I'm pretty sure.

Not quite the Amarna period (Late Amenhotep III, Akhenaten, Tutankhamen).

It's nice to see the colors on the monument. Those are still quite vibrant after such a long time.

The erasures on Hatshepsut's images on her monuments have to do with the erasure of this particular queen from history.

I'm not sure if the officials from the time of Akhenaten then went back and also reased the name of Amun from Deir-el-Bahari?

LOL Very Happy Not the first time and I'm afraid it won't be the last time either.

I should have known better too! I have picture of that scene on my website:
http://euler.slu.edu/Dept/Faculty/bart/egyptianhtml/kings%20and%20Queens/Hatshepsut.html

I sadly have only ever spent about 2 days in Egypt and never made to Luxor, Karnak or any of those sites.
I would love to be able to see these temples someday.

NOT. Smile

It`s from Karnak. The remains of the buildung from the time of Hatschepsut at Luxor are very few, just some blocks re-used in the barque chapels of Ramses II.

Greetings,

Lutz
