Does anyone know?!

I think after years of Scientific study it is all still theory.
Whenever they have tried techniques out they have never been entirely successful.

I'm sure lots of sites have the basic steps BUT do any of them really have the full process?
They have never identified all the chemicals used. Plus also there is a recent theory that the reason that they have never mastered the art of mummification is because some of the chemicals the ancient egyptians used have degraded beyond recognition.

Alas the process may be lost forever! Surprised

If my memory serves me right, (?) I believe Bob Brier carried out a successful mummification using only the raw materials that would have been available to the ancients.

Bob Brier did perform a mummification on a cadaver a while back and it worked but it wasent all sucsesful- ie liver was to large to fit through small hole and arms where to stiff to bend etc ( I saw a discovery program on this about a month ago) But the problem with mummification is the Egyptian dident actualy write down how the actual process was performed (at least not to my knoledge) So it is all just theory.

happy day!

Looks like the riddle of mummification is finally being unravelled Laughing (Sorry couldn't resist that)

Apparently it's all down to the cedar tree that the Egyptians imported from Lebanon.

I have put the information on my site at:
http://www.ancientnile.co.uk/mummy.html#news
or you can go to:
http://www.abc.net.au/science/news/stories/s971830.htm
for more info.
