I was thinking, (for once) and i came up with the idea of making an Egyptian
Dreams photobucket. We could all add our photos and eventually we would build up quite a big database. This way people discover more of Egypt and ask questions about interesting objects/places.
Well, what do you think, should i make one up?

I have a huge Photobucket collection, and to keep so many photos I pay for expanded storage. No big deal--a rather small, yearly fee. This might be what's required if you're thinking of a board-wide account where people can upload lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of photos. Interesting idea. _________________

I just checked out the Wikimedia page. This looks like a great resource and a good way to share photos. It's a lot more complicated than Photobucket and you have to jump through a few hoops to upload even one photo, but I set up an account and chose a photo I took at the O.I.
They're quite concerned with proprietary issues and so you have to fill in info about source and licensing, but I plowed through it. LOL Now I'm just trying to figure out exactly where in Wikimedia my upload is hiding. I can't seem to find it except through my own account page. _________________

What's all this in aid of?
Conorp, we have 678 registered users!
Access for all to upload (to photobucket or to a website)?
It's not realizable, I think!

Wait i think i get what you mean.
Do you mean that we wouldn't be have enough space for all the photos?
If that is your question here is my answer.
First off, I doubt that all 678 members would upload pictures. Also we could use Wikimedia Commons which i believe has no limit to the amount of pictures you can upload or if we going to make a website we could upload photos at diffrent image host and just link to them from the website.
Or we could use Wikimedia Commons and just link to each individual photo on the web site.

Also, only a small percentage of those 678 registered members are probably active participants on the board. Most long-running forums carry a lot of dead weight.
And of the actual active members, I agree that only some of us are really into sharing images and photographs. _________________

Maybe not the best choice of words. I think that what is meant is when you look at our member list and sort on total posts you will find names of quite a few people who are no longer around.
At any given time there are usualy about 10 people who may be actively participating in discussions. Sometimes less. I would say that right now there may be 10-20 people who show up regularly. The other 620 or so members either are no longer here or come around so infrequently that they would probably not participate in something like a photo-collection.
Then there are also people who sign up and maybe post 1-5 times. Those are usually not people who really contribute. Maybe "dead weight" is a bit harsh.
I don't mind the one or two time posters as much as the ones who ony post inane things like "this is cool" "great" and that's pretty much the entire content .... _________________ Math and Art: http://mathematicsaroundus.blogspot.com/ |

I don’t think it is fair to be sour with members who cannot express themselves well, or who choose merely to lurk and read.
On May 15th this year, a contributor was kicked off the board in disgrace for repeatedly posting what seemed like harsh, abrupt statements, liberally peppered with links to other sites. (See General Discussion / Was Cleopatra good or bad)
At the time, I felt too new here to enter the kind of discussion which arose, but in retrospect, I think [...]’s only real defect was his rather weak English, which did not allow him the fluency to create a better impression.

LOL I don't care about those who lurk and read. That is great. I don't mind people either who only occasionally join in the discussions. There's nothing wrong with that.
What I mentioned are some posts you don't see too much because we usually say something about it to the posters. It's the people who post 10-15 messages at time and whose messages are devoid of content. I'm talking about the people who do not understand the difference between a chat room and a discussion board. And at times I have deleted their comments.
If I sound sour, then so be it. As a moderator I do keep track of the messages which means I have to read all of them. I enjoy banter, exchanges that are humorous and even if they are slightly off topic, but I don't like it when people come on with some 10 oneliners that don't contribute much. I have in mind some kids who got to a count of more than 100 posts without ever really managing to say much.
For as far as commenting on individual posters and mentioning them by name? I can't really get into that and I won't say anything more than that I completely and totally disagree with above assessment. _________________ Math and Art: http://mathematicsaroundus.blogspot.com/ |
