Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOPgpkNb_Fw&feature=related

About Kawab's death and proof that he was not killed by his half-brother Djedefra, as Reisner thought. He was a good guy, but he made stories. Romantic ones, however.

You have internet at school? How luxurious Laughing

Do you have other documentation than the Utube link? I can't see those video's here as they use Flash in their player.

Sorry no. But I am not interested in the statue, rather in Kawab.

I believe that much of what that TV show might have discussed (I didn't see it) can be found here .

Apparently, it has been argues that the sphinx was once either a jackal or a lion, or perhaps both, before finding it's ultimate form as a sphinx. One has to admit that the head is out of proportion to the body and so perhaps represents the final carved down phase of a different original.

Anubis makes sense from a mortuary perspective, and I like to think that, but there are problems with rendering that much horizontal form in the limestone of that area.

Well, my old friend Google Laughing brought me these, just his name was needed:

http://www.ancient-egypt.org/glossary/people/kawab.html

and not to forget the Page by Anneke:

http://euler.slu.edu/~bart/egyptianhtml/kings%20and%20Queens/Kawab.html

@AnnekeThe Porter and Moss part 3 seems to be locked, any suggestions?

I was watching a programme about the Sphinx recently and it seemed to delve into more unconventional theories than usual. I feared at one point that it would veer into the 10000BC fringe when the voiceover said 'was the sphinx built earlier than the pyramids?' but thankfully, this wasn't too bad.

The theory in question comes from a guy called Colin Reader. I've not heard of him...is he one of the fringies? His theory claims that the Sphinx of Giza was built before the pyramids-but not by a lost civilisation! He says it was built when the Egyptians were first starting to work with stone, somewhere around the 2nd dynasty I think? And he claimed the Sphinx was lion headed originally.

Hi isisincrisis,

I know Colin Reader personally from meetings at the Manchester Ancient Egypt Society, and I've also seen the programme to which you refer.

Colin's background and training are in geology. He's a really nice guy, and definitely not a crank, but I believe that he is wrong about the age of the sphinx. As you point out, the Giza plateau wasn't savannah in the early dynastic or late predynastic periods, and that would seem to be crucial to the water erosion theory.

As for the head being smaller than one would expect (and therefore possibly carved down from a previous lion head), my best guess is that the Egyptians knew they were working with poor quality stone which simply wouldn't support the weight of a correctly scaled head.
