Right now it may not be possible to establish if it's true or not, but it's possible. If the idea that the Sphinx was originally just a rocky outcrop that looked like a lion is correct (see the thread below) it may well have had a lion's head once, that got recarved into a human head. Smile

Also the head looks proportionately smaller than the body of the lion.

That's because the rock in which it was carved has its flaws: it's not the head that's small, it's the body that's too large: when works on the sphinx began, they didn't know the center part of the rock was weaker than the rest of it. When they found out, they wouldn't have been able to make the rear legs stand closer to the front paws, because the rock would've cracked.

At least that's what I read, but Lehner said it nicer... Confused

I was wondering if anyone knew any other cultures who copied the idea of the Sphinx. I now some have been found on the Island Crete from the Minoan period and I've a feeling either Greeks or Romans had them. Can anyone tell me any other places that had Sphinxes?

We know examples from Hatti (Hethiter / Anatolien), Babylon, Assyrien, North Syria, Greek, Etruskian and Rom.

Greetings, Lutz.
