If you are going to Tel el Amarna you have Tuna El Gebel just to the north, what you see is Gerco-Roman but the tomb of Petosiris is beautiful or you have Beni Hasan 23 kilometers to the south with some of the best tombs outside Luxor. Have a nice holiday.

From Amarna I would also suggest a quick stop at El Ashmunien with it's lovely Toth statues

& Meir with it's sixth dynasty tombs and Sheikh Ibada (Antinopolis) which has a small temple and a sprawling town.

Further afield is Akhmim which has a wonderful statue of Meritamun amongst other things in it's open air museum.

You probably know you will have to have a police escort to all these places so your itinerary will need to be pre arranged.

How are you getting to Abu Simbel? Are you taking a cruise in which case you will see several other temples on the way down & the approach to AS is wonderful Very Happy If you fly or coach in you will not be able to see anything else unless you stop at Aswan on the way. It is the one part of Egypt where convoys are still compulsory. We drove down there in November & had to set off in one even though we were in our own car Rolling Eyes

Certainly the best way to approach AS Smile We did it in 2002 & the sight of the temple appearing on the horizon was absolutely wonderful. The 2 of us had it completely to ourselves for an hour & a half last November, that was really something & then 3 other people arrived.

Cruises only go from Luxor to Aswan (although there are rumours of a new Cairo - Aswan cruise schedule some time next year) but I wouldn't hold your breath for that.Rolling Eyes

Amarna & all Middle Egypt is very difficult to travel round because of security & the nearest hotels are in Minya. We actually went on an organised trip (our first one ever!) because of the hassles in getting permissions etc Sad How much you see is really dependent on the policemen you get & the mood they are in.

Smile I think that we in Egypt should first to visit the pyramids and various statues. Afer that we can go drink coffee and then sail down the Nile. But my favorite part would be to go visit the temples and tombs of Egypt which has a lot, and maybe on the way we would meet the gods and goddesses. Idea
