Hi there,Does anyone know of a good sight telling you sights that are open round cairo, and saqqara.
Next year,me and my fiancee are visiting Egypt on our honeymoon, and although Ive been to Egypt before,it is my fiancee's first time.I was suprised last time when I visited cairo and saqqara for the first time to find that that only pyramid in the saqqara complex that I could go into was the pyramid of teti.Although I had prevously asked my arab friend to specifically enter the pyramid of unas and step pyramid, which I did not know were not open to the public until we arrived.
Were also planning on visiting Abu simbel and the temple of Isis at philae :
Any comments would be appreciated.thankyou. |

This link from the SCA might help
http://www.sca-egypt.org/eng/SITE_List.htm
However, it does cover the whole country so you need to know the names of the places you hope to visit. |

That will be a good idea because the SCA do take sites on and off the lists as and when further work is being carried out.
If you plan to travel down to the Luxor area send me a PM near the time and I can advise you as to what is going on here then.
Say hi to Hampshire for me....we used to live in Eastleigh. |

Some of the information on the SCA site is wrong and / or outdated:
- Abusir is open for visitors according to the site but this is not the case
- In the Imhotep museum you no longer can take pictures at all (since 2009)
- In the Military museum you can take pictures without flash (ticket 10 egp)
These are the examples I'm aware off, there might be other mistakes on the website _________________ www.desheret.org |

Another error is that it says of the VOK
NO PHOTOGRAPHY IS ALLOWED INSIDE THE TOMBS. Cameras must be left outside.
Cameras are not allowed anywhere in the Valley now. You have to leave them in the vehicle. _________________ http://picasaweb.google.com/112743752796606929007 |

How rediculous.I for one will keep my camera in my bag.I can understand the rules for no camera,s in the tombs to conserve them. But if I want to take a picture of the valley cliffs then I will.. |

Sorry but you have to go through a metal detector to get in. Bags all have to go through a scanner, the same as airport ones with a mini conveyor belt. The camera will be removed at that point. _________________ http://picasaweb.google.com/112743752796606929007 |

The security will check your bag and you have to leave your camera at the entrance of the Valley.
If you have a women on your side you can give the camera to here. Sometimes it works that they have a look at the mans bag but not for the one of the female company (last time on November the 13th, 2010 ... but, no guarantee!).
If you take pictures in the Valley be carefull and make sure that nobody from the Egyptians can see it. The fine should be surely high and you get rid of the memory card or is extinguished.

Very true Lutz, the fine is up to 10,000$.
The loss of all the photo's on the memory card (not just the ones taken in the Valley) could be an even worse loss, especially if you have a card full of legally taken photo's We were in the VOQ very recently and a German man was very lucky to escape with a severe warning and eviction from the tomb! _________________ http://picasaweb.google.com/112743752796606929007 |
