This article http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/5092.aspx mentions that some of the sites are ok.

Now I hope they are right, but getting the straight story is challenging.

Quote:
Hawass told Ahram Online that reports being published in the media claiming that the Memphis, Saqqara and Abusir necropolis were plundered are untrue. These sites, he continued, like all archaeological sites in Egypt, are safe and have not been looted.

What I have been able to find:

1. Saqqara
Dr Collombert of the University of Geneva is quoted as saying there was some unorganized and random treasure seeking by local youth. (http://www.saqqara.nl/news Sunday Feb 6 comment)

A National Geographic reporter mentions that the tomb of Maya being fine. He is quoting "Hussein, the government archaeologist." (NG report)

It sounds like there had been some looting according to the local officials, but that the damage is not as bad as initially reported.

2. Abusir
A reliable source in Cairo (who had this directly from one of the SCA inspectors at Saqqara) confirmed that the Czech magazine at Abusir and the Cairo University magazine at Saqqara have been looted.(from http://www.saqqara.nl/news Sunday Feb 3 comment)

Not sure what is going on? Is Hawass not getting the real information because his people are afraid of being blamed? Is he trying to spin the story to make the situation look better? Is he saying the sites are ok because they may be right now (several days later)? Is he going by the most positive reports and is somewhat in denial?

It's hard to say what is going on. Some of the reports are from anonymous sources (what is their agenda if any?) It's not clear what is actually going on.

Mark Lehner supposedly has said that the Giza plateau is ok.

3. Luxor
Luxor and KArnak really seem to be fine.
Chicago House in Medinet Habu is continuing its work ( as of Tuesday Feb 1)
A French team is still working at Karnak ( as of Tuesday Feb 1)
A Polish team is still working at Deir el Bahari ( as of Tuesday Feb 1)
( Source: Interview with Miriam Seco)

4. Amarna
Seems to be ok according to Barry Kemp.

Thank you for the round up. I have now stopped Googling for information because i have become a bit fed up with all the incorrect information being reported as fact.

I am getting daily reports from Dr Hawass and i am genuinely happy with them. Until photos disprove Dr H- i am prepared to ignore the conspiracies. I just do not have enough time these days....

Thanks Anneke,

Stuart

It is very hard to get the straight story. And you can kind of see how all the rumors start too. Someone may be at the site and witness something, tells the story to a journalist and everything including speculation and surmised activity is reported (as fact).

I read Hawass' blog/newssite but the one from Saqqara online I find interesting and seems well-informed. That is from Dutch Egyptologists and they are careful how they report it and actually give the source of the report.

I am very leery of any story from "a person they will not identify".

I eagerly await the inventories which are being discussed, so that clarity can be provided. Dr ZH is trying very hard to keep us informed and i appreciate that.

Facts will follow and i am sure that we will be surprised by the findings. We will always have something to discuss, but recently we have been struggling to locate sources that are reliable. Hopefully belts will tighten up regarding site security in the future - in fact i expect it.
