Has anybody heard any news from Amarna on the situation there during these troubles?

Yes- it was reported (yesterday i believe) that Salima Ikram and and Barry Kemp are fine:

http://www.***/2011/01/barry-kemp-salima-ikram-safe.html

As for the storage magazines- there have been no reported break-ins to date. Also no reported damage done to the site of Tell-el-Amarna. Staff working at Amarna are safe, see this from Salima:

http://news.discovery.com/archaeology/egypts-treasures-assessing-the-damage.html

She has been speaking with Discovery.

I hope this helps Granite. Should you wish to know more, then i might suggest:

http://egyptopaedia.com/2011/

Just click on "Middle Egypt" on the left hand side of the page. Thanks to Kate Phizackerley, Andie Byrnes, Lauren Neal, Julia Thorn

Depends on what kind of info you're looking for, but for me there are a number of sources, bbc.co.uk and Kate's site being just two of them, and I think I stumbled either over you, or a namesake somewhere on the web Wink

It would seem we are looking at the same sources, Richard. I have been trying to keep up to date and report what i find, like many others, including Kate- her http://egyptopaedia.com/2011/ helps us to look at the damage done to Ancient Egyptian sites - whilst her other blog keeps us up to date with Egypt 2011.

Sorry, my fault.

As I explained on News from the Valley of the Kings I was worried about the database becoming a treasure map for looters while sites were unguarded so I blocked access from Egypt as a temporary measure. The consensus is that I was overcautiious so the block has been removed. My apologies.

Please apologise also to anybody else in Egypt who has failed to access the site, no offense was intended - only care not to make things harder for those citizens on the ground trying to protect sites.

PS I cannot test the removal, so please shout if you hear of any residual problems.

Understandable Kate, I try to sort out things from BBC and al Jazeera myself and, to say the least, it is quite confusing. But testing the removal of the block would be easier if the link to the database had been reposted here. We now have so many sites to monitor, we barely can see through it.

Kate, if you read this, your database is perfectly accessible again
