If he does decide to quit, it will be interesting to see who will be his successor.

It is interesting to read this, but what is the source? - was this an interview directly with the Kate girl from the NY Times Blog? or heresay? or what? There is nothing on his website suggesting he might be considering retirement or stepping aside (yet). Then a search shows there are a gazzillion articles online now saying the same thing, but using the Kate Taylor girl as their source, could this perhaps be wishful thinking, maybe slightly sensationalized reporting and/or folks playing Chinese whispers?

Successor? would that not need to wait until the installation of the elected government? - certainly the armed services could or should make moves to better protect the heritage sites etc. 24/7 two guys with guns and a radio can do wonders

Interim (successor)? perhaps an army chief, but that might be limited to role of protection only and could have the effect of closing down the professional season

Just have to keep watching I guess...

Apparently the whole cabinet resigned today?:
Quote:
SCAF Accepts Shafiq’s Resignation, Assigns Essam Sharaf to Form Cabinet

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces accepted on Thursday 3/3/2011 the resignation of Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq.

The council assigned Dr. Essam Sharaf the formation of the new cabinet.

That would include Hawass ...

But other news items (one on a Dutch newspaper) only mention Shafiq?

But why would Sharaf be forming a new cabinet if everyone else stays in place?
Confusing ...

The confusion is that this is a de facto cabinet, nobody is official until there has been an open and free election. The military council are pushing for the electoral process to start, soon, now, yesterday!

There is no constitution, until the electoral process has been implemented, hence the continuing push for someone, anyone to instigate the process. The objection is that the people (and the military council, as their agent) are not willing to allow folks appointed by Mubarak in the closing days of his regime to be part of this process, that's fair

Hawass has been in place for a long time

He who defines the process and publishes a date, holds the key

Hawass has quit! Here is a link to one of the press releases: http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/03/egyptian-antiquities-chief-resigns/?partner=rss&emc=rss

Just hours before he quit he updated his website with a list of the monuments that have been looted. I note that for the first time he acknowledges that Abydos is being raped nightly and that he has done nothing to put a stop to it. Here is the link to his site: http://www.drhawass.com/blog/status-egyptian-antiquities-today-3-march-2011

Perhaps a full (resignation) interview will follow. This all seems a bit odd to me.

New, enlarge and very thought-provoking article by Paul Barford at:

Now this, again from Al-Ahram:
The fate of Egypt's antiquities
After protests by archaeologists, the ministry for antiquities is no longer under the jurisdiction of the culture ministry but rather that of the cabinet Nevine El-Aref , Monday 7 Mar 2011
Following several decisions and counter decisions, the ministry for antiquities became a Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) under the direct supervision of the Cabinet, rather than the ministry of culture

Egyptian archaeologists managed to keep antiquities independent from the ministry of culture. Egypt's newly appointed Prime Minister Essam Sharaf agreed to keep the ministry of antiquities an independent body among the cabinet echelon and separate it from the ministry of culture.

Such a ministerial decision came following demonstrations held by hundreds of Egyptian archaeologists who picketed from the garden of the Egyptian museum in Tahrir up to the cabinet building in Qasr El-Aini street demanding an independent ministry.

What next? We wait with bated breath...

For all his faults (many of which are highlighted in this thread), Dr Hawass has undoubtedly done a great deal for the cause.

I for one am saddened that he has been removed from his post.

As I said on the 18th:
Posted: Mon Jul 18, 2011 11:01 pm Post subject: Attack on Zahi

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As you may have heard by now, Z. Hawass is no longer a Minister of Antiquities.
As he was leaving his office, a mob of 300 people attacked his car, threw rocks at it and wouldn't let it leave. Friends rescued him from his car and took him to an unknown location.
Later, 150 supporters demanded, from the Prime Minister, that the person who was to replace him be dismissed.
You can find a video of the attack on youtube, but the title is in Arabic, which I do not speak or read, so I don't know how to find it.
These facts, I know, are quite skimpy, but I'm sure we'll hear more later. Whatever your personal feeling are towards Z. Hawass, this action was terrible.

Awful, shocking behaviour aside, do you think we will be better or worse off without him?
