Libyan Desert Glass was formed around 28,000,000 years ago through the impact of a meteorite which heat and presurre melted the sandstone, then under a luxuriant vegetation, in an area range of ~130 km. Some of these gems can be seen in the jewelery of the pharaohs, like a scarab on a Tutankhamun's necklace.

Nice clear pictures of the pectoral and especially the scarab.

I have one question though. Given that Libyan Desert Glass has a hardness of 6-7 on the Mohs scale does anyone have any idea what the scarab was engraved and polished with?

To me the most likely candidate would be corundum but I have no idea if this was available to the AE. Other candidates would be a gemstone of some sort, maybe topaz or garnet, though garnet only has a hardness of 7.5 on the Mohs scale. Again I do not know if topaz was available at the time but seem to recollect that garnet was.

Any thoughts would be welcomed. Idea :
