That is interesting that the sphinx was written about in ancient Greek as a being Ceberus. They both guarded the underworld. My understanding was that Ceberus was actually a three headed dog. This to me is different from a sphinx. And Anubis was actually the one who had to protect the dead in the underworld. I have never read that the sphinx guarded the underworld, but it does make sense. There does seem like a gap between Ceberus and the sphinx though, I think the idea of Anubis as a protector of the underworld, and sphinx as a powerful aspect of creation, being human and lion, might have given rise to the three headed dog Ceberus.
