JSTOR - Free to read

Quote:
JSTOR offers free online reading access to the archives of 1,200 of the world’s most prominent journals

January 9, 2013 – New York, NY

JSTOR, the not-for-profit digital library of thousands of academic journals and other content, announced today that the archives of more than 1,200 journals are now available for limited reading by the public. This is part of a major expansion of JSTOR’s experimental program Register & Read, in which people can sign up for a JSTOR account and, every two weeks, read up to three articles online for free. ...

Greetings, Lutz.

That has been available for a while (maybe it was beta), and it is very nice but also frustrating. Unless you buy the article you cant D/L or save, just read the article.

They apparently render the PDF to an image and it takes a while to move from page to page due to the conversion. Too often, JSTOR forgets who you are and you have to log in again, then flip 20 or 30 pages to get to where you were (tip: modify the "&seq=XX" element in your address bar to jump ahead to a specific page). Having only one JSTOR window open seems to help a little.

As an alternative, some US public libraries belong to JSTOR and can print copies of articles etc for you for free or a nominal fee.

Well, would`nt this forum not be the right place this information also give to others? I did not try and do not use it because I have access over my library, in many cases also remote from home...

Apparently what can be accessed for free is limited to a subset of papers etc. Several things I have tried to read simply aren't available. I cant figure out the distinction though whether it is size, age, type of source of what.
