A real horror message arrived from Middle Egypt: Luxor Times - Thursday, 15 August 2013, 08:25 p.m. ...
1040 objects out of 1089 were stolen from the looted museum of Mallawi, Minia
"1040 objects were stolen out of 1089 objects on display on Mallawi museum in Minia which was looted yesterday. Most if the rest if the big size statues were damaged as looters couldn't transfer them. Another sad day for the Egyptian heritage."
I was there in November 2004. It is a little but fine museum with extraordinary objects from the nearby archaeological sites Tuna el Gebel, Assuit and Amarna. Unique are the objects from the city / necropolis of the god Thot and the Middle Kingdom chest coffins from Assiut, emong them some of the nicest and most impressive I've ever seen.
Pictures from 2004 : Das Mallawi-Museum & Das Mallawi-Museum - Nachtrag.
The Egyptologist Monica Hanna is currently compiling an image database in the hope to find some pieces back by police, customs office and art traders : Mallawi Museum List of Stolen Objects.

The photos are shocking. I have rather strong views about this looting, and hope that an iron fist comes hard down on those responsible, so hard that any further looting will be seen as not worth it. Some smiting and impaling seems to be needed... |

A quite moving report by citing Monica Hanna, who tried together with others immediately after the looting to save what still could be saved...
"Egypt's devastating museum looting latest casualty" (August 19, 2013, 5:37 PM, Associated Press)
I can only once again point on the here in this thread earlier announced lecture in London, on 7th of September.

It is profoundly disturbing to read in that link about mummies being burned. To have survived for millenia simply to now be destroyed for the pleasure of, well, there are no polite words strong enough to describe them... |

Of course they will try to bring the objects out of the country and sell them to collectors. As long as there are buyers who are willing to pay almost any amount, that will not change. So, from this point of view the work of Dr. Monica Hanna and colleagues is appreciate not high enough. The image database they initiated allows everybody easily and quickly identification of objects as they appear somewhere (art dealers, auction houses, etc.).

Oh I do hope they return a majority of the looted objects. They really need to have better and thorough protection of these museum, particularly in Egypt, during it's current unstable situation. |

So do I, but a combination of criminals and people desperate for something to feed their families with would suggest that the odds are against getting many of the objects back.
My heart bleeds for the people of Egypt at the moment, one the one hand they are living under the threat of random violence and on the other many people's livelihoods have disappeared along with the tourists.
I love Egypt and its people and I hope that sense will prevail and the people at the top, on both sides, realise that their actions are destroying something unique and irreplaceable. Given the current attitudes I am not holding my breath. |
